| We made our way up the street and walked a little while till we remembered where the weinerschnitzel was. The streets were full of people whose sole thoughts were on themselves. The cars were crammed into neat little rows and moved at an impossibly sluggish pace. The smell of exhaust was particularly strong when the bus took off in a cloud of smoke. We ran along the sidewalk laughing maniacally at the prospect of chili fries.
Running past big commercial businesses like Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Barnes and Nobles, Gap and so on.....on our way to chili heaven. I suggested we give into the crowds and the hot food court. She rapidly made a face and scolded me for my conformist ideas then quickly swore she knew where the restaurant was. I stood there staring, suddenly she grabbed my hand shoving me into a big blue bus. In minutes, we were in an air conditioned contraption of the gods cruising along the beachside. She chatted excitedly with a short blonde and I pretended to be interested in bus ads that claimed they were "poetry in motion."
As the bus rounded the corner her whole face lit up and she claimed to know where we were. After ten more minutes of banter with her new friend she springs up rings the bell and pulls me out of my seat and out of the bus. I squint as the sun hits our faces. She smiles triumphantly and dons her sunglasses. I turn around and stare at the bright weinerschnitzel. She takes a bow and rushes off into the nearest liquor store. I wait patiently still trying to see the ocean but only managing a staring contest with the sun.
She returns in a state of bliss with big hopeful eyes. We both look down the street and it seems to stretch forever away from the beach. The cars keep zooming by up and down the silver hills. She lets out a howl of impatience and leans her head on the metal at the side of the restaurant. I do the same and it feels so good on my sunburned and throbbing face. We step in front of the ordering window and look up at the menu. She starts jumping in place then rushes to the window. She orders for the both of us and, since it is fast food, we are seated and eating in seconds. I stare at her artist hands and sigh. So uniquely hers. She looks up at me with the look of someone in deep rapture. Damn the chili I am renouncing it for life. She smiles broadly, taps her nose and walks to the bathroom. I sit alone and damn her chili master. She comes back smelling strongly of glue and I grimace. She punches my arm and rushes out towards the awaiting bus. I don’t even try to keep up instead I let her hop on and wave at me from the back window. I silently curse at her and sit on the bus bench. For the second time in 3 days she leaves me. I stare at the endless stretch of blue sky and practice my seagull call. The lady next to me gives me the once over as my bus arrives. |
